Overview
Course aimed at healthcare professionals interested in the care of neurocritical patients, including doctors, nurses and therapists in thefields of neurosurgery, neurointensive care, neurology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Neurocritical patients represent one of the greatest challenges in contemporary clinical practice. Acute neurological conditions — such asstroke, traumatic brain injury, intracranial haemorrhage and status epilepticus — continue to be significant causes of morbidity andmortality, requiring rapid, integrated and highly differentiated responses. These patients, who are often unstable and unable to expressclinical changes clearly, depend entirely on the ability of healthcare teams to recognise early signs of deterioration and interveneeffectively. It is in this scenario that the role of neurocritical care becomes absolutely central. The management of neurocritical patients combinesknowledge of intensive care medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, emergency medicine and early rehabilitation, requiring continuous andmultidisciplinary training. The constant updating of best practices — from advanced neurological monitoring to neuroprotection strategies— translates directly into better clinical outcomes, fewer sequelae and higher quality care.Aware of this reality, the Intensive Care Service of the Algarve Local Health Authority (ULS Algarve) has taken on the responsibility ofpromoting training and skills development by organising this course. We aim to create a space for scientific sharing, multidisciplinarydiscussion and professional development that will contribute to the overall improvement of neurocritical patient care in our region and inthe country.

Objectives

  • Understand neurocritical physiology, including cerebral perfusion, intracranial pressure dynamics, and mechanisms of secondary braininjury.
  • Recognise and assess major neurological emergencies through focal neurological examination and interpretation of imaging studiesand monitoring data.
  • Manage acute neurological crises, including intracranial hypertension and status epilepticus, using evidence-based protocols.
  • Integrate new and emerging technologies such as multimodal neuromonitoring, PrX, and bedside transcranial Doppler to supportclinical decision-making.
