FMCB: Knowledge that Cares, Science that Transforms

The Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (FMCB) was founded on a clear vision: to train highly qualified professionals, produce meaningful knowledge, and contribute to better health in the Algarve, Portugal, and the world.

Today, FMCB is in a phase of consolidation and growth. We have a strong academic foundation, a modern curriculum, a dedicated community, and an increasing capacity for research and innovation. We also embrace a particular responsibility: responding to the real needs of a region characterized by great social and demographic diversity, specific healthcare challenges, and enormous development potential.

We are committed to honouring the path already travelled, preserving what we do well, and moving forward with ambition, rigour, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Educating for the Medicine of the Future

At FMCB, we believe that scientific and clinical excellence only makes sense when it serves people.

Through active learning methodologies, including problem-based, case-based, and team-based learning, as well as clinical simulation and real-world experiential learning, we prepare our students to understand the complexity of health and respond effectively to the needs of patients and communities.

However, educating doctors and biomedical scientists is about more than transmitting knowledge. It is about developing professionals who can listen, communicate, work collaboratively, and recognise that behind every diagnosis there is a person, a family, and a story.

In a world shaped by technological innovation and artificial intelligence, humanism remains something we cannot afford to lose. At FMCB, we aim to educate professionals who are not only technically outstanding, but also attentive, compassionate, and committed to the common good.

A Faculty Connected to the Algarve

FMCB exists in the Algarve and for the Algarve. Our mission is deeply connected to the region that hosts us and to the people who live here.

We seek to contribute to more qualified and accessible responses to the region’s healthcare challenges by strengthening the links between education, healthcare services, municipalities, social institutions, and the wider community. We want our students to know the region, understand its needs, and discover opportunities to learn, serve, and build both their own future and the future of the Algarve.

A strong commitment to primary healthcare is a priority. We need professionals who recognise the scientific, clinical, and human value of general and family medicine; who appreciate continuity of care; who understand prevention and health promotion; and who are prepared to support people throughout their lives.

FMCB aims to help create the conditions for more students to choose the Algarve as a place to study, work, and build their careers. We want to educate professionals who feel that their knowledge can make a real difference in communities and who see their profession not only as a career, but also as a way of serving others.

Science with Impact

Research is one of the pillars of FMCB’s identity. Through ABC-Ri and the national and international collaborations we establish, we promote ambitious, rigorous, innovative science focused on real-world challenges.

Our ambition is to bring scientific discovery closer to clinical practice and societal needs. We seek to support both fundamental and applied research, encourage collaboration across disciplines, and build bridges between the laboratory, clinical practice, healthcare services, and public policy.

Biomedical sciences, neuroscience, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer biology, public health, primary care, and the development of new biomarkers and therapeutic approaches are examples of areas in which research can generate knowledge and drive transformation.

At FMCB, we believe that scientific excellence and social relevance are not competing goals. On the contrary, when they reinforce one another, research can create impact not only through published articles, but also through clinical decision-making, healthcare services, and people's lives.

We also aim to involve students in research from an early stage, fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong commitment to learning.

A Community Open to the World

The Algarve is an international, dynamic, and multicultural region. FMCB seeks to reflect that reality and become increasingly open to Portugal, Europe, the Portuguese-speaking world, and the wider international community.

We aim to attract students, academics, researchers, and partners from different backgrounds and regions, creating a diverse, inclusive, and stimulating academic community. At the same time, we seek to strengthen our students’ sense of belonging and their connection to the University, the Faculty, and the region.

Healthcare education should take place both inside and outside the classroom. For this reason, we value participation in community projects, health literacy initiatives, volunteer activities, interdisciplinary collaboration, and experiences that bring students closer to people and to society’s real challenges.

Our vision is to help establish the Algarve as a true healthcare ecosystem, a Health Valley, where universities, healthcare providers, local authorities, businesses, social institutions, and communities work together to create solutions with regional value and national impact.

A Collective Commitment

No Faculty is built by a single person or a single leadership team. FMCB is shaped by its students, academics, researchers, technical staff, healthcare professionals, alumni, and partners.

The future we seek to build requires dialogue, stability, responsibility, and the capacity to innovate. It also requires that we work together, recognise what has already been achieved, and courageously address what still needs to be transformed.

We aspire to be a Faculty that is rigorous and compassionate; demanding yet approachable; local in its mission and international in its ambition; innovative without losing the values that give meaning to medicine and science.

FMCB exists to educate, to research, and to serve. To care for the Algarve and contribute to better health in Portugal. To transform knowledge into action and talent into commitment.

FMCB aspires to be a Faculty of reference, not only because of what it knows, but because of the good it is capable of doing.

Utilities

The Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (FMCB) and the associated Research Centres are linked to several national and international partnerships in order to enhance the quality of research. These partnerships allow students to work in collaboration with several reference laboratories, fostering interest in scientific research and enabling research work carried out within the scope of the courses taught by the department to be published.

Visual identity

The DCBM logo must be used to advertise activities, publications, multimedia material, dissemination of programmes and projects.

Logos can be used freely in print media or web pages, as per the conditions indicated in the graphic standards manual of the University of Algarve.

You should choose the logo format that best ensures its legibility on the background and in the medium on which it will be applied.

The basic design of the logo must not be changed, specifically:

  • Proportions/dimensions (height and width)
  • The pre-defined colors in the different versions of the logo (colour, positive, negative).

Logo - Caixa Geral de Depósitos

The University of the Algarve has partnered up with Caixa Geral de Depósitos, which is why whenever there are events at the University of the Algarve, reference should be made to Banco CGD, namely the logo on posters, etc.
