About the course
The Introduction to Hostile Environments Course is a short, accessible online training programme aimed at professionals who work, or intend to work, in high-risk contexts, namely journalists, diplomats, humanitarian workers, and professionals from the business sector.
Developed in partnership with the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection and READY Portugal, the course adopts an introductory approach with a strong practical component, providing an overall perspective on safety, risk management, behaviour under threat, and personal preparedness.
The training enables participants to acquire fundamental knowledge in a flexible way and from any location. It represents a first level of preparation for complex and challenging environments, with the possibility of progressing to more advanced training programmes.
Objectives
To provide participants with an introductory, structured, and evidence-based understanding of the essential principles of safety, risk management, and behaviour in hostile environments, disaster settings, or conflict areas, serving as a conceptual foundation for informed action and potential progression to more advanced training.
- Inform participants about the skills required to deal with risk situations;
- Improve participants’ capacity for conflict resolution and civilian protection in hostile environments;
- Strengthen participants’ confidence in effectively dealing with risk situations;
- Provide resources that allow participants to further develop their preparedness to operate in hostile environments through self-learning.
Methodology
This course will be delivered through interactive online lectures. The course will not include a formal assessment; participants who are absent from more than 20% of the sessions will not be eligible to receive a certificate.
Target audience
The course is intended for health professionals who work, or intend to work, in risk contexts, as well as journalists, diplomats, and humanitarian professionals involved in missions in unstable, disaster, or conflict environments.
