Overview
Avoiding separation between the newborn and the mother/father is essential for a smooth transition to extrauterine life, better brain development, bonding and breastfeeding, and the emotional and psychological well-being of both the baby and the parents. In this sense, kangaroo care and skin-to-skin contact are fundamental strategies. The WHO identifies the Kangaroo Method and skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth as a priority, a good practice, and a fundamental care measure that can save almost 1/3 of all newborns worldwide, especially premature and low birth weight newborns. Skin-to-skin contact has numerous benefits for both the baby and the mother/father or significant other. For premature newborns, evidence also reports improved physiological stability, reduced hospitalisation days, better growth and development, and better mental and emotional health for parents. In this regard, SMIPN intends to begin implementing the WHO recommendations for skin-to-skin contact from birth in moderately premature newborns and the DGS (2023) standard, which recommends skin-to-skin contact from birth for at least 1 hour. In compliance with these guidelines, initial resuscitation and stabilisation of the newborn will be carried out on the mother's or father's chest, avoiding separation. This requires training and practice by the teams involved. The care is the same, only the location is different.
