Overview
Given that colposcopy is an indispensable examination in modern gynaecological practice, there must be constant concern for both consistent learning and periodic updating. To this end, this course provides the basics of an introduction to colposcopy.

The basic colposcopy courses have been organised since 2012, with the scientific sponsorship of the SPCPTGI (Portuguese Society of Colposcopy and Pathology of the Lower Genital Tract), alternately by Dr Amélia Pedro, currently head of the Colposcopy and LASER Unit at CUF Sintra Hospital, and Dr Amália Pacheco, head of the Colon and Lower Genital Tract Pathology / LASER Unit at the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve - Faro Unit. The Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences has held four editions so far (2015, 2017, 2019 and 2023).

These courses have been improved and are currently structured according to the EFC (European Federation of Colposcopy) training programme, and in 2016 they were approved and certified by the EFC for the first time. Given that colposcopy is an indispensable examination in modern gynaecological practice, there must be constant concern for both consistent learning and periodic updating. The course provides a basic introduction to colposcopy. The initial introduction sets out the objectives of the course with theoretical and interactive sessions, so that the student understands the principles of colposcopy and knows how to recognise and identify lesions in the different images presented, in order to subsequently guide their treatment and follow-up.

The scientific sponsorship of the SPCPTGI, the certification by the EFC and the alternation of the basic course between the University of the Algarve and NOVA Medical School are an important step towards accreditation in colposcopy.
