Overview
Clinical assessment in obstetrics comprises maternal and foetal assessment. As the foetal component is difficult to access, the use of ultrasound as a means of foetal assessment has become essential. Despite the availability of ultrasound devices, the technical and practical skills of professionals are lacking, not only in the handling of these devices, but also in their application in foetal assessment in an obstetric context. All professionals in emergency settings who have contact with pregnant patients are required to ensure the assessment of both patients – the pregnant woman and the foetus – so that, when an ultrasound device is available, they should be able to use it for this purpose. This is particularly relevant in the context of gynaecological and obstetric emergencies, where all medical staff should have this knowledge, especially colleagues with specific training who, having no prior training, must respond to this need from an early stage.

Objectives

The aim of the course ‘Basic Obstetric Ultrasound Assessment’ is to:

  • Provide theoretical knowledge about ultrasound techniques;
  • Explore the use of ultrasound devices, both in general and specifically applied to obstetrics;
  • Teach how to systematically assess the foetus and intrauterine components using ultrasound (6-step methodology);
  • Introduce concepts of foetal well-being and address the application of the biophysical profile as an ultrasound tool for this purpose;
  • Apply knowledge in practice, using simulation on ultrasound models available at the UAlg Simulation Centre.
